After a year in college, Carava headed to the racetrack and began a career path that would lead him to opening his own public stable in Southern California in 1993. Carava was born in the shadow of Santa Anita Park in Arcadia and his father, Mike, was a trainer. In 1984, Carava went to work for trainer Joe Griffin and moved to Jerry Fanning's barn the following year when Griffin left the business. With Fanning's blessing, Carava trained a few horses on his own and saddled his first winner in 1987.

By the time he went out on his own Carava had developed an eye for claiming horses, and that skill has been the core of his successful business. His breakthrough star was First Intent, who he claimed for $40,000 in 1995 and developed into a graded stakes winner. In recent years, Carava's primary client has been Ron Valenta's La Canada Stable, which has been the leading owner at meets. Valenta abruptly left the sport in November 2011 and Carava has added new clients to his stable.
