Trainer Jim Cassidy was born and raised in New York, N.Y. He began showing horses at age 12 but in his 20s he started taking racehorse layups at his farm on Long Island. He took out his trainer's license in 1975 and spent the next 10 years learning as an assistant to top trainers on the East Coast including Joe Canty, Frank Whitely and mentor Charles Sanborne
Cassidy then headed west where he would establish his own stable in California. Today he keeps a stable of around 35 Thoroughbreds, training and racing on the Southern California circuit.

Top horses trained by Cassidy include The Usual Q.T., third in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Mile, Evening Jewel, third in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, multiple graded stakes winners Prize Exhibit, Tom's Tribute and Ticker Tape and Katdogawn and graded stakes winners Moscow Burning, Yahilwa and Ocho Ocho Ocho.
