Trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., broke through on the national stage when his colt Math Wizard scored an upset victory in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 21, 2019.
That was the first graded stakes win for Joseph, a native of Barbados who began training in south Florida in 2011. Joseph, the son of a trainer in his home country, started his career in Barbados and conditioned 2009 Barbados Triple Crown champion Areyoutalkintome.

That was the first graded stakes win for Joseph, a native of Barbados who began training in south Florida in 2011. Joseph, the son of a trainer in his home country, started his career in Barbados and conditioned 2009 Barbados Triple Crown champion Areyoutalkintome.
After his breakthrough in the 2019 Pennsylvania Derby, Joseph settled in at his Gulfstream Park base and started racking up stakes wins there and with horses shipping around the country, highlighted by White Abarrio’s win in the 2022 Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa.
Two of his best runners during the early 2020s, Skippylongstocking and Soul of an Angel, scored multiple graded stakes wins in marquee events. Skippylongstocking won the Charles Town Classic Stakes in both 2023 and 2024, while Soul of an Angel gave Joseph his first Breeders’ Cup win with a last-to-first rally in the 2024 PNC Bank Filly & Mare Sprint at Del Mar.
