Teresa M. Pompay

A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., whose grandfathers were big
racing fans, Pompay spent many summer days in her youth at Saratoga
Race Course. She rode show horses and made her first foray into the
racing world at 16 when she began exercising horses for trainer
John Russell. Pompay was the stunt double for Kristy McNichol in
the made-for-TV movie "My Old Man," which was filmed in Saratoga
Springs. She continued to exercise horses while in college and
following graduation in 1983 had a brief career as a jockey. Pompay
exercised horses during the five years she worked in pharmaceutical
sales then moved into racing on a full-time basis with trainer Ron
Taylor. They spent about seven years together, and when their
relationship ended in 1995 she opened her own stable on the
Florida-New Jersey circuit. Pompay had a large group of family
members - including her parents - and friends cheering as Currency
Swap secured Pompay's first Grade 1 victory in the 2011 Hopeful at
Saratoga.
