Trainer Tom Van Berg took over the stable of his father, Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg, when he died on Dec. 27, 2017. Tom Van Berg had been serving as an assistant to his father and previously trained on his own for nine years, winning the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap in 2004 with Sonic West.
Jack Van Berg won the 1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness with champion 3-year-old male Alysheba. In 1988, Alysheba won the Breeders' Cup Classic en route to Horse of the Year honors..
