Take Charge Brandi was nowhere near the radar of top 2-year-old fillies for most of the year, but now she has established herself as the leading candidate for the Eclipse Award in her division.

After a 61.70-1 upset in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and a game win in the Grade 3 Delta Downs Princess Stakes, Take Charge Brandi arrives as the one to beat in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos.

It’s never easy to predict when a horse will notch a career-best effort. There are, though, signs that can indicate whether you’re dealing with a one-hit wonder or a horse who has finally found its best stride.

The $1-million Shadwell Turf Mile                              

If you watched the Shadwell Turf Mile and saw where the odds-on favorite was at the top of the stretch, you might have been worried that your bets were about to go up in smoke.

But that wasn’t just any favorite languishing at the back of the pack. It was Wise Dan.

Coming off a 25-length loss generally does not point the way to a winner of a claiming race, much less a Grade 1 stakes.

Of course, sometimes a reasonable explanation can erase the blight of an ugly performance.

Belle Gallantey came into the $400,000 Grade 1 Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park after a 25 ¼-length loss in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga.
