Arrogate

Arrogate finished third, beaten by less than a length, in his career debut in April 2016 at Los Alamitos. A bit immature in the spring, Arrogate turned in a dominant 4 1/2-length vcitory when stretching out to 1 1/16 miles in June at Santa Anita Park. Another runaway win followed three weeks later, this time a 5 1/4-length win, before he shipped to Del Mar and extended his winning streak to three with another convincing victory in August.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert showed confidence in Arrogate by sending him to Saratoga Race Course for the 2016 Travers Stakes, and he responded about as well as a racehorse can to that type of challenge when he set a new track and stakes record for 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.36 in one of the most visually stunning performances of the year.

The $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic and a showdown with California Chrome was the next target for Arrogate. His Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert had won Classic the previous two years with Bayern (2014) and American Pharoah (2015). California Chrome set the pace in the Classic, while Arrogate was content to stalk from behind the pacesetter and Melatonin. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith asked Arrogate to accelerate on the turn and he drew alongside California Chrome near the top of the stretch. Chrome edged away a bit in early stretch under a confident ride from jockey Victor Espinoa, but Arrogate would not be denied. He and Smith finished with a powerful rush to overtake California Chrome in the closing strides for a career-defining victory. The Classic-Travers double also lifted Arrogate to the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male and he was a finalist for Horse of the Year.

Following the season, Arrogate earned the distinction of being named Longines World's Best Racehorse, edging, once again, California Chrome.

In his 2017 debut, Arrogate was entered for a rematch in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes, but the much-anticipated showdown never developed once the starting gate opened. Arrogate seized command on the far turn and dominated to pick up the $7-million winner's share in the inaugural edition of the race at Gulfstream Park.

Arrogate next ventured to the United Arab Emirates where he ran in the $10 million Dubai World Cup as the heavy favorite. He missed the break and started the race at the rear of the field but began advancing steadily on the turn for home. Arrogate ran past fellow American Gun Runner at the  head of the stretch and rolled to a dominant victory to become the richest North American racehorse of all time, with more than $17 million in career earnings.

In his first race following the Dubai trip, Arrogate finished a "flat" fourth in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in July at Del Mar. He improved in his next start when closing willingly late to finish second to stablemate Collected in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes.

Arrogate is by 1995 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Unbridled's Song out of multiple stakes winner Bubbler, by Distorted Humor. His third dam (maternal great-grandmother) is champion Meadow Star, a six-time Grade 1 winner.
