That day, he broke his maiden by half a length in 1 1/16 mile maiden special weight on dirt. After sitting in midpack early, he took full advantage of the long stretch at Fair Grounds to get up and win.

Next out, on Feb. 13, he competed in a first-level allowance at Fair Grounds. He sat closer to the early pace that time, and opened up a clear lead in the stretch. Although he got tired late, he held on for a half-length victory.
In his graded stakes debut, the Mar. 13 Grade 2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, Big Lake closed to finish third at 18-1, under jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. With that performance, he earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
