Bonny South

Bonny South finished fourth in her November 2019 debut in a sprint at Churchill Downs. She stretched out to one mile and 70 yards in December at Fair Grounds and won her second start via disqualification.

The chestnut Munnings filly won her 3-year-old debut by three-quarters of a length from well off the pace and then employed the same tactics to win the Grade 2 Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks by 2 1/4 lengths on March 21 at Fair Grounds in her stakes debut. After a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in July, Bonny South finished second to Swiss Skydiver at a mile and a quarter in the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga.

Making her next start in the Grade 2 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Oct. 3 at Pimlico, Bonny South unleashed a furious late rally but came up a neck short in a runner-up finish to Miss Marissa. She then closed out her 3-year-old season with another second, this time to Envoutante in the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs.

After a 4 1/2-month layoff, Bonny South came back and unleashed a top-level effort in the Grade 3 Baird Doubledogdare Stakes April 16 at Keeneland, edging Royal Flag by a head. In her second start off the layoff, in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park on June 5, she rallied from behind and finished second to favored Letruska. 

Bonny South next finished a puzzling fifth as the 1-2 favorite in the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap but ran better in her final three starts of 2021, finishing a fine second by a half-length to Letruska in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes, third to that champion in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes, and then second in the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap in November. The mare was rested for five months but came back for a 6-year-old campaign in 2022 trying for a repeat bid in the Baird Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland on April 22. She closed late but settled for second behind a champion again, this time to Malathaat, the honoree as 2021’s top 3-year-old female who was making her 4-year-old debut.

 Bonny South is out of the Tapit mare Touch the Star, a half-sister to French Group 1 winner Etoile Montante.
