City of Light broke his maiden in his second career start by an impressive 7 ½ lengths at Del Mar on Sept. 1, 2017. He then ran second in two consecutive allowance optional claiming races that fall before stepping up in a big way in his graded stakes debut on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Park.
Facing a good field of 3-year-old sprinters in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes, the Michael McCarthy-trained Quality Road colt led at every point of call and won going away by two lengths.

After winning twice and running second three times in five starts at three, City of Light returned to begin his 4-year-old season in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes. He pulled alongside paceseter Bobby Abu Dhabi in the stretch and put that foe away en route to another Grade 1 victory. Stretching out in distance for his next start in the Grade 2, 1 1/8-mile Oaklawn Handicap on April 14 at Oaklawn, City of Light rallied up to challenge for the lead on the turn and then outfinished 2018 Santa Anita Handicap winner Accelerate to prevail in a thrilling stretch duel. City of Light's three-race winning streak came to a halt when Accelerate got the better of him in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita.
City of Light was sidelined with a minor malady after the Gold Cup but he returned in August at Saratoga with a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga when cutting back in distance to seven-eighths of a mile.
That race set him up for a start in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs. In that race, the colt broke sharp from the inside post, took the early lead and never looked back with Javier Castellano aboard in an impressive win over Seeking the Soul.
In the final start of his career, City of Light delivered the most dominant performance of his career. He stalked the pace from second in the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes, seized command on the final turn, turned away 2018 champion older male Accelerate entering the stretch, and powered to a runaway victory under Javier Castellano.
City of Light was a $710,000 yearling purchase in 2015 at the Keeneland September sale.
