Covfefe

Covfefe, named for a presidential typo, won her first start impressively by 9 1/4 lengths. She was stretched out to a mile for the Frizette Stakes in her next start but finished fourth and was given the rest of her 2-year-old season off.

The filly returned at age 3 to win a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race at Keeneland by a half-length before again trying graded stakes company in the Adena Springs Miss Preakness Stakes on Preakness weekend. In that race Covfefe broke from the rail and took the lead immediately. When asked for her best she continued to widen on her rivals and completed the six furlongs in a track-record time of 1:07.70.

In the Roxelana Stakes at Churchill Downs June 22, Covfefe set a pressured pace and gave way grudgingly late when third by three-quarters of a length.

Covfefe rebounded nicely in her next start when she outfinished 2019 Longines Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress to win the Grade 1 Longines Test Stakes by a half-length Aug. 3 at Saratoga Race Course.

After romping in a listed stakes at Churchill Downs in September, Covfefe shipped to Santa Anita Park for the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. She broke from the inside post in that six-furlong race as the favorite, and patiently tracked the early pace under Joel Rosario before taking command at the top of the stretch.

Multiple Grade 1 winner Bellafina made a late rally, but Covfefe held on for a game three-quarter length win and burnished her credentials for an Eclipse Award as champion female sprinter.

In January 2020, Covfefe’s connections enjoyed a memorable Eclipse Awards to honor the filly’s 2019 campaign, as she received trophies as Champion 3-Year-Old Filly and Champion Female Sprinter at the ceremony.

Covfefe is a daughter of top sire Into Mischief out of the Unbridled mare Antics. She was purchased for $250,000 as a yearling.
