Cowan

Cowan began his career with a victory, pulling away to a 2 ¾-length win in a 4 ½-furlong race May 22, 2020, at Churchill Downs. Subsequently unplaced in the Runhappy Juvenile Stakes on the main track at Ellis Park, the Kantharos colt switched to grass and finished third in his turf debut Sept. 12 in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes.

Cowan stayed on the turf for his next two races and finished second in both the Indian Summer Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select on Oct. 4 and then the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. In the Breeders’ Cup, Cowan closed from eighth of 14 and came up three-quarters of a length short of front-running victor Golden Pal.

In his final race as a 2-year-old Cowan stretched out in distance to a mile and returned to the dirt for the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes Dec. 18 at Remington Park. Cowan rallied from midpack to finish a well-beaten second, 5 ¾ lengths behind winner Senor Buscador. He picked up an additional four points toward qualifying for the 2021 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve when he finished a distant second in the Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 22 at Oaklawn Park.

Next out, Cowan finished second in the Al Rahji Bank Saudi Derby on Feb. 20, at King Abdulaziz Racetrack. 

Cowan started his 4-year-old season with a victory via disqualification in the Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds on Jan. 22, 2022. He crossed the wire second, but was elevated to the victory when Just Might, who crossed the wire first, was disqualified and placed last. 

Stakes-placed winner Tempers Flare, by Smart Strike, is the dam (mother) of Cowan.
