Cross Border needed nine starts to earn his first career victory and then toiled in the claiming ranks for the remainder of his starts as a 3-year-old. A late developer, he began to turn a corner during his 4-year-old season earning a win on the synthetic surface at Woodbine and then a win on the grass at the Toronto-area track in spring 2018.

After running second in his 5-year-old debut, Cross Border strung together three straight wins, including a pair of allowance victories in New York. He subsequently finished fifth in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes in his first try against stakes competition but bounced back to win a 1 3/8-mile allowance race in November at Aqueduct.
As a 6-year-old in 2020, Cross Border ran second in the Grade 3 W. L. McKnight Stakes and later in the year won the Lubash Stakes July 22 at Saratoga for his first career stakes win. Ten days later, Cross Border scored a breakthrough graded stakes victory when he won the Grade 2 Bowling Green Stakes via disqualification Aug. 1 at Saratoga.
As a 7-year-old in 2021, Cross Border finished third in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 23, at 14-1. He was then third in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes on Mar. 27.
Cross Border won the Bowling Green for the second year in a row on July 31, 2021
