Crown Pride was 2-for-2 in 2021 in his native Japan. He won his debut by six lengths and his second race by three lengths, both at 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles) on the dirt. After a sixth-place finish in the Hyacinth Stakes Feb. 20, 2022, at Tokyo Racecourse, the Reach the Crown colt shipped to Dubai and won the $1 million United Arab Emirates Derby Sponsored by Mubadala on March 26 at Meydan. The win earned Crown Pride 100 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

Crown Pride was bred by famed Shadai Farm. His owner Teruya Yoshida is son of Shadai Farm founder Zenya Yoshida. Teruya Yoshida played the key role in Shadai’s purchase of 1989 Horse of the Year Sunday Silence, which was one of the most consequential stallion acquisitions in Thoroughbred racing history. Quite simply, Sunday Silence shaped the modern Japanese Thoroughbred as leading sire for 13 consecutive years and helped elevate Japanese breeding-racing to new heights as a sire of sires.
