Curly Jack

Curly Jack was unveiled in a 5 ½-furlong 2-year-old maiden race at Churchill Downs on June 2, 2022 and was a four-length winner that day in an impressive looking start to his career for trainer Tom Amoss.

Curly Jack next tried the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes on July 16 at Saratoga where he finished fifth. He followed that up with a second-place finish by a head in the Ellis Park Juvenile at seven furlongs on Aug. 14 with jockey Edgar Morales aboard.

The next stop for Curly Jack was Churchill Downs for the Grade 3 $300,000 Iroquois Stakes on Sept. 17. Curly Jack sat off a contested pace as the race’s two favorites battled for the lead and eventually tired and passed by them in mid-stretch and drew off to a one-length win at odds of 10-1. The win was the first stakes victory in the career of jockey Edgar Morales. Curly Jack handled the 1 1/16-mile distance in a time of 1:45.62. The Iroquois was the first points race in the 2023 Kentucky Derby Challenge series.  Curly Jack became the first horse to earn 10 qualifying points for the 2023 running of the Kentucky Derby.

Curly Jack made his next start in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Nov. 4 at Keeneland. He finished fifth, was he was successful at picking up another six qualifying points for the 2023 Derby. He concluded his 2-year-old campaign with a solid runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 26.

Curly Jack made his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 $400,000 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds on Feb. 18, 2023. He was sent off as the 8-1 fifth choice in the tote board in a field of 14 horses, and settled for an eighth-place finish.

Curly Jack is trained by Tom Amoss. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Good Magic out of the mare Connie and Michael by Roman Ruler.
