Ohio-bred Dark Vader finished second by a head in his career debut on Sept. 7, 2017, and then ran off the board in two races before closing out his 2-year-old campaign with a nose win at Los Alamitos in December. The Peter Eurton-trained Tale of Ekati colt resumed racing in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Feb. 3 and finished a nonthreatening third behind Lombo and Ayacara, earning two qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
