After finishing fifth in his career debut, Drefong bounced back to win his second race in November 2015 at Del mar. He strung together a three-race winning streak to begin his 3-year-old season, capped by a 3 1/4-length runaway win in his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Ketel One King's Bishop Stakes in August at Saratoga Race Course.
After finishing fifth in his career debut, Drefong bounced back to win his second race in November 2015 at Del mar. He strung together a three-race winning streak to begin his 3-year-old season, capped by a 3 1/4-length runaway win in his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Ketel One King's Bishop Stakes in August at Saratoga Race Course.
Drefong was then pointed to the TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park by owner Charles Chu. Sent off as the 7-2 third choice, Drefong dueled with race favorite Masochistic and put that foe away in the final strides to win under Martin Garcia. After the 2016 season, Drefong was named the Eclipse Award winner as champion male sprinter.
Drefong made his first start as a 4-year-old in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar on July 29. Moments after the start, he ducked in and unseated rider Mike Smith. After regrouping, Bob Baffert brought his charge back to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Forego Stakes on Aug. 26, and Drefong romped to a four-length win under Smith, earning an automatic berth to the 2017 TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
From the first crop of three-time champion Gio Ponti, Drefong is out of the unraced Ghostzapper mare Eltimaas, a half-sister to champion Action This Day.
