J B Strikes Back was well-defeated in his first two career starts during spring 2024 but responded when dropped down to the $20,000 maiden claiming level and won his third start for trainer Doug O’Neill by 3 ¼ lengths in a one-mile dirt race on July 21 at Del Mar.

O’Neill claimed the 3-year-old gelding back after his fourth start, and after an unsuccessful try on turf in September, J B Strikes Back began to improve, finishing fourth in an allowance optional claiming race in October at Santa Anita Park and then winning back-to-back allowance optional claimers, each held at one mile, by open lengths at Del Mar during its Bing Crosby meet.
The gelding next made his stakes debut in the newly-named Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes on Santa Anita Park’s Dec. 26 opening-day card, and he summoned a career-best effort to defeat Tarantino by 1 ¼ lengths at odds of 16.40-1 in the 1 1/16-mile, Grade 2 stakes.
O’Neill bought J B Strikes Back for $52,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. March 2-year-old auction in 2023. The dark bay or brown gelding is a son of O’Neill-trained Goldencents, a multiple Grade 1 winner, and is out of the stakes-winning Scat Daddy mare Allanah. He is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Reincarnate.
