Irish-bred Maltese Falcon lost her first six starts from October 2022 through July 2023, the first coming in England and then five consecutive races at Santa Anita Park. The Caravaggio gelding nonetheless was sent off as the 3.20-1 favorite in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap Aug. 6 at Del Mar, which followed a good runner-up effort in a listed stakes at Santa Anita in June.

Jockey Juan Hernandez gave Maltese Falcon an expert ground-saving ride for most of the 1 1/16-mile turf race, and the gelding found running room along the inside to rally past pacesetter Panic Alarm and get up for a one-length win, breaking his maiden in a graded stakes.
