Maxfield

Maxfield won his first career start at Churchill Downs by three-quarters of a length and immediately jumped into Grade 1 company in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. There Maxfield took command at the top of the stretch and powered home to an open-lengths win to earn a place in the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

An injury forced Maxfield to miss the Juvenile as he underwent surgery to repair an ankle chip and did not race again as a 2-year-old.

Trainer Brendan Walsh took his time bringing Maxfield back up to full speed and he made his 3-year-old debut May 23 in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. He closed from off he pace and reeled in runner-up Ny Traffic and Attachment Rate in the closing strides to improve to 3-for-3. He also earned 50 points toward qualifying for the 2020 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

After missing several months due to physical issues, Maxfield returned a winner with a 2 1/2-length score in the Tenacious Stakes at Fair Grounds on Dec. 19.

Maxfield made his 4-year-old debut a winning one on Feb. 13, winning the Grade 3 Mineshaft Stakes at Fair Grounds. He lost for the first time in his next start when he finished third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap March 6 at Santa Anita Park. He bounced back smartly in his next start, rallying to take command near the top of the stretch in the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet and then pulling away to a convincing win in 1:41.39 for 1 1/16 miles.

Maxfield continued his winning ways in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 26. He made a bold move on the final turn and drew away for a 3 1/4-length win. He covered 1 1/8 miles in  1:48.53. With that win, Maxfield earned a spot in the starting gate for the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on November 6, as part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series. In his next start, he finished second in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 7.

Maxfield finished second in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 2, and subsequently passed the Classic. He was pointed for the Grade 1 Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare at Churchill on Nov. 26. It was announced prior to the race that the Clark would be his final start. He went out a winner, stalking early leader Midnight Bourbon, wearing him down in the stretch, then fending off the challenge of Happy Saver for the half-length win. 

Maxfield is a son of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense who raced for his breeder, Godolphin.
