Mischief Magic (IRE)

A Godolphin homebred trained by Charlie Appleby, Mischief Magic earned his first career win in his second start when winning by a length and a half in a three-quarter-mile race July 26 at Goodwood. He followed with an impressive 6 ½-length runaway at the same distance Aug. 13 at Newmarket.

Tested next against stakes competition for the first time in the Group 3 Unibet 3 Uniboosts a Day Sirenia Stakes Sept. 3 at Kempton Park, Mischief Magic aced the exam with a two-length win under William Buick. He subsequently ran fourth in the Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, but the effort was good enough for Appleby to circle the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on the calendar for the colt's next start.

Mischief Magic shipped to the United States for his next start on Nov. 4, 2022, and justified Appleby's belief in him when he made a rousing last-to-first closing move inside and through a 12-horse field to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland. Sent off as the fifth choice on the tote board, Mischief Magic completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in a Juvenile Turf Sprint record (5 1/2f) time of 1:02.41 to win by a length under jockey William Buick.

A bay colt by Exceed And Excel, Mischief Magic was produced by the Elusive Quality mare Veil of Silence, who also is the dam (mother) of multiple stakes winner Sound and Silence, a full-brother to Mischief Magic. The family also has produced 1994 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner and sire Barathea.
