Newgate made a nice first impression when winning his career debut by 3 ½ lengths July 30, 2022, at Del Mar. Subsequently unplaced in both the Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity and Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, the bay colt by Into Mischief showed improvement against stakes competition when second to Havnameltdown in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes Nov. 20 in his final race as a juvenile.

Newgate opened his 3-year-old season in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes Jan. 8 at Santa Anita Park and took the lead in early stretch before fading to finish second to pacesetting stablemate Reincarnate.

Following consecutive seconds in the Bob Hope and the Sham, Newgate took center stage to earn his first stakes victory in his next outing in the $200,000 Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes on Feb. 4 at Santa Anita. Sent off as the even-money favorite in a field of four Bob Baffert-trained entrants, Newgate ran the 1 1/16 distance in a time of 1:43.11 to win by a neck. He paid $4 to win.

Unfortunately, Newgate was diagnosed with a minor foot injury after his win in the Robert E. Lewis and was taken off of the Kentucky Derby trail. He did not return to racing until Jan. 6, 2024, where he finished a close second in an allowance optional claiming race at Santa Anita. The now 4-year-old followed that up with another good runner-up finish, this time to Newgrange in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 27.

In his third start of 2024, Newgate rounded back to the form he showed early in the previous year, rallying from off the pace to catch longshot frontrunner Subsanador at the finish line of the 1 ¼-mile, Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap Presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino on March 3.

Following a ninth-place finish in the Dubai World Cup on March 30, Newgate took six months off and returned to the races on Sept. 28 for the inaugural running of the Grade 1 $1 million California Crown Stakes at Santa Anita. In the California Crown, Newgate again faced his rival Subsanador, but this time came-up a head and a nose short in a three-horse blanket finish along with National Treasure and settled for third.

Grade 3-placed winner Majestic Presence, by Majestic Warrior, is the dam (mother) of Newgate.
