Nova Rags broke his maiden at Belmont Park on Oct. 10, 2020. He won his career debut by 3/4 of a length at 9.80-1, with Junior Alvarado in the saddle for trainer Bill Mott.
After a fourth-place finish in the grade 3 Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct, Nova Rags rebounded to win his 3-year-old debut in the Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Jan. 16. He stalked the pace and drew away for a 2 3/4 length win, with Samy Camacho in the saddle.

Nova Rags followed up that performance with a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes on Feb. 6, finishing behind stablemate Candy Man Rocket. He earned four points on the road to the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
After a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa on March 27, Nova Rags was taken off the Derby trail. He bounced back with a second-place effort in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on Belmont on May 8, followed by a third-place performance in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes Presented by Nassau County Industrial Development Agency on June 5.
