For his next start, Pappacap was shipped west, for the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 7. He stalked the pace and drew off to win impressively under Joe Bravo. After running fourth in the Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity, Pappacap bounced back with a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes Oct. 1 at Santa Anita Park. The Gun Runner colt again showed his class in his next start when he rallied gamely to finish second in the $2 million TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Nov. 5 at Del Mar.
Pappacap made his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds on Jan. 22, 2022. He rated off the pace and made a move up the inside in the stretch, but could not get by and ended up finishing third. For his efforts, he earned two qualifying points on the road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
