Pneumatic opened his career with back-to-back wins, prevailing by a neck Feb. 15, 2020, in his career debut and then winning an allowance race in April by 2 ½ lengths while stretching out to a mile. After making his first two starts at Oaklawn Park, Pneumatic shipped to Churchill Downs for the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes May 23 and finished third behind winner Maxfield and Ny Traffic.

Owner-breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds next sent Pneumatic to the June 20 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, the rescheduled first leg of the 2020 Triple Crown. Breaking from the outside post in a field of 10 horses, he stalked the pace and remained in contention through the middle of the homestretch, but tired late to finish fourth in a race won by Tiz the Law. Pneumatic earned 15 qualifying Kentucky Derby points with the effort, bumping his total to 25.

In August, Pneumatic earned 20 more Kentucky Derby qualifying points when winning the final Derby prep race of the season, the TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Pneumatic is out of multiple stakes-placed winner Teardrop, by Tapit. Teardrop is a full-sister (same dam [mother], same sire [father]) to graded stakes winner War Echo and stakes winner Farrier and she is a half-sibling (same dam, different sire) to 2008 Louisiana Derby winner Pyro and multiple stakes winner Longview Drive.
