After winning three of his first four starts, Runhappy showed his immense potential with a stakes-record-setting victory in the Grade 1 King's Bishop Stakes in August on the Travers Stakes undercard at Saratoga Race Course.
Runhappy set the pace in the King's Bishop and powered well clear in the stretch to win by four lengths in 1:20.54 for seven furlongs, which was the fastest time in the history of the race.

He followed with a gutsy victory in the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland Race Course to punch his ticket to the TwinSpires.com Breeders' Cup Sprint and extend his winning streak to four. The 3-year-old was impressive on Oct. 31 when pulling away to win the Sprint in a track record time. Runhappy closed out his 3-year-old season with another visually impressive victory in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes. He was honored after the season with an Eclipse Award as champion sprinter.
Runhappy did not make his 2016 debut until October, when his connections attempted to stretch him out to a mile in the Ack Ack Handicap. He took the lead but then tired in the stretch, finishing fourth as the 1-5 favorite.
