Safe Conduct, a 3-year-old Bodemeister colt owned by WellSpring Stables and trained by Philip Serpe, entered the history books as the winner of the 162nd Queen’s Plate, the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, on Aug. 22 at Woodbine.
Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Safe Conduct pressed the pace in the 1 ¼-mile classic, took the lead coming out of the far turn, and was all out to fend off several challenges including a late rush from Riptide Rock, who came up a head short.

The colt began his racing career on dirt, finishing fourth in an August 2020 maiden at Saratoga, and then won his turf debut at Saratoga later that month. He won one of four starts through the rest of 2020 and into summer 2021 and was unplaced in two stakes races, one on dirt and one on turf, before his breakthrough win on Woodbine’s synthetic Tapeta main track.
A $45,000 purchase by WellSpring at the Keeneland November sale in 2018, Safe Conduct is out of the winning Congrats mare Duchess Dancer, a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year and champion sprinter Fatal Bullet.
