Shadow Dragon made a nice impression in his career debut, winning a three-quarter-mile sprint Sept. 29, 2022, at Aqueduct, by three-quarters of a length for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Stretching out to a mile and tested against stakes competition in the Sleepy Hollow Stakes for New York-breds, the Army Mule colt finished a well-beaten sixth.

Shadow Dragon made his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes Feb. 4, 2023, and closed powerfully at 34.10-1 odds to finish second by three-quarters of a length to stablemate Rocket Can. The second-place finish earned him eight points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. He subsequently finished fifth in the Grade 2 $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 4, which earned him another five Derby points.
Grade 3-placed Fire Assay, by Medaglia d’Oro, is the dam (mother) of Shadow Dragon. Multiple Grade 1 winner Jostle, by Brocco, is Shadow Dragon’s grandam (maternal grandmother).
