Sombeyay

Sombeyay won his career debut by 6 1/4 lengths in April 2018 at Gulfstream Park. He subsequently finished second by three-quarters of a length in the Tremont Stakes on June 8 at Belmont Park.

The bay colt made his graded stakes debut in the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes on July 21 at Saratoga Race Course and reeled in Strike Silver in the closing strides for a thrilling victory.

He closed out his 2-year-old campaign with fourth-place finishes in both the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes and Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity. Sombeyay was winless in four starts as a 3-year-old, but he finished second by a nose in the Lookin At Lucky Stakes and second by a head in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes, making the switch to grass racing for the final two starts of the year.

After running second in an allowance-optional claiming race on the turf in his 2020 debut, Sombeyay returned to the winners circle with a victory from off the pace in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf Stakes Feb. 29 at Gulfstream. He followed with a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes March 28 but was unplaced in his final two starts of 2020.

Based on the West Coast with trainer Peter Miller for his 2021 season, Sombeyay opened his 5-year-old season with a victory in an allowance-optional claiming race going a mile at Santa Anita. He followed with a fourth-place finish at the same track and distance Feb. 6 in the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes. Cutting back to three-quarters of a mile for the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes March 13, he battled gamely in the stretch before coming up a neck short of Gregorian Chant.

Multiple stakes-placed winner Teroda, by Limehouse, is the dam (mother) of Sombeyay.
