Tom's d'Etat launched his career in May of his 3-year-old year and notched his first victory at Saratoga that summer, winning by four lengths in his third start. That win kicked off a stretch of more than two years' time in which he went 6-of-7, culminating with a win in the Tenacious Stakes at Fair Grounds in December 2018.

He stepped up to Grade 1 company in his 6-year-old bow but finished a disappointing ninth in the $9 million Pegasus World Cup in January 2019. After a few months off, his second start of the year was much improved, finishing second to McKinzie in the Alysheba Stakes on the Kentucky Oaks undercard.
Tom's d'Etat next set the pace in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes on June 15 and held on well until deep stretch, when he tired to finish third behind Seeking the Soul and Quip. He proved much the best in his next start when he opened a commanding lead in early stretch of the Alydar Stakes Aug. 2 at Saratoga and coasted to victory. Tom's d'Etat next finished fourth, beaten by 1 3/4 lengths in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets.
In the Grade 2 Hagyard Fayette Stakes Oct. 26 at Keeneland, Tom's d'Etat earned a breakthrough graded stakes win on a sloppy track when he rolled to a 4 1/4-length runaway victory as the 3-2 favorite.
After his win at Keeneland, Tom’s d’Etat was pointed to the Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare on Nov. 29 at Churchill Downs with the goal of securing a Grade 1 win to enhance his stud value. He did not disappoint in the 1 1/8-mile Clark, saving ground through the backstretch and drawing well clear of the field under Joel Rosario through the lane to score a career-defining 3 ¼-length victory.
Tom’s d’Etat won the Oaklawn Mile Stakes by three-quarters of a length in April 2020 at Oaklawn Park and then followed with a powerhouse performance in the Grade 2 Stephen Foster Stakes as he pulled away in the stretch to a dominant victory. He had his four-race winning streak halted in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes, when he stumbled at the start and trailed early before rallying for third.
