Watsonville, a Jack Milton colt trained by Mark Glatt, finished fourth and second in his first two starts during spring 2023 before winning a one-mile turf race at Del Mar July 29 by a half-length. He followed that up with another late-running score at the seaside California track, this time getting up to take a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race by three-quarters of a length.

The colt was then elevated to test graded stakes company, and during the fall and early winter he posted a sixth-place finish in the Grade 2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita Park and then a fourth-place effort in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar.
In his final start of the season, Watsonville outfought odds-on favorite Almendares to win the Grade 2 Santa Anita Mathis Mile by a nose on Dec. 26.
Kentucky-bred Watsonville is out of the unraced Kitten’s Joy mare Grand Slam Kitten.
