Happy November and goodbye to another year of the Thoroughbred Makeover! Congratulations to all of my fellow competitors and a big thank you to everyone who made it such a wonderful event. It’s hard to believe we have made it to the other side of this big thing I’ve been anxiously – and I mean, up all night, crazy person, anxiously – awaiting for close to a year.

I will admit that I am in a bit of denial that our Thoroughbred Makeover experience has come and gone. There’s just something about working so hard and so long to accomplish a goal, and finding the way to put those feelings and experiences into words has been challenging. That being said, the two best words that I can come up with to describe how I feel about our experiences are proud and thankful.

It took two days of preliminary competition and a Saturday filled with nearly 50 horses competing in the 10-discipline Finale at the 2022 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, but when the dust settled it was She’s a Bold One who took home the title of Thoroughbred Makeover Champion, sponsored by Churchill Downs.

Jeff Bloom is a Thoroughbred maven, but according to him, the definitions of a genius, a maestro, or a wizard, do not square. He’s a person of humility, and people of humility would never admit to being something like a maven.

That’s what makes him one.

The original Yiddish translation of the word did resonate for him — someone who understands — sparking a wry grin. “You know my grandparents spoke Yiddish, and they came to the states before World War I, as immigrants from Eastern Europe, Russia, and specifically, Ukraine,” he explained.

Pennsylvania-bred Saratoga Jack, a dark bay 9-year-old gelding, is set to debut in his new career at the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover on Oct. 12-15 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky., where he will be participating in the Dressage discipline.
