Lindsey Taylor became infatuated with horses as a young girl and fell in love with racing at age 12. The Georgia native and recent Keeneland intern shares the details of her journey as a racing fan.

I am not sure if I became a fan of horse racing by coincidence or fate. I didn't grow up with horses, nor did I grow up in a place anywhere near areas that had horse racing. At the time I lived in Alpharetta, Ga., a suburb north of Atlanta, and somehow I inherited the “gene,” the “horse gene” as my mother likes to call it.

This year, America’s Best Racing and the Retired Racehorse Project will be sharing diaries from several trainers preparing for the 2019 Thoroughbred Makeover competition, scheduled for Oct. 2-5 at the Kentucky Horse Park. This diary is by equestrienne and horse racing industry professional Hillary Ramspacher, who shares how she came to acquire her filly Tapanista that she is training for the Makeover.

This Saturday, March 16, Oaklawn Park will take the spotlight on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with the $1 million, Grade 2 Rebel Stakes.

This story was originally written in 2017 and has been re-published with an update on Sam P. (see below).

Ten years ago, Sam P. was part of one of the best 3-year-old crops in recent history when making his way along the 2007 Kentucky Derby trail around the country. Today, ‘Sam’ is enjoying life at a slower pace as a dressage horse.
