Nothing captivates a horse racing audience quite like a dominant performance. When I was researching a feature on Afleet Alex’s 2005 Triple Crown a few weeks back, it got me thinking about some of the best Triple Crown performances since the turn of the century, and there were so many good ones.

On Thursday, we posted the top five fantastic finishes of the century. For this list the only caveats were that the race must have occurred in this century and the winner had to prevail by at least one length.

Kentucky Derby fashion is important to men as well as women. (Photo by Eclipse Sportswire)

For thousands of people, the Kentucky Derby is far and away the single greatest event, sporting or otherwise, they attend in a given year. When preparing for an event as significant as the Run for the Roses, often the hardest thing (even for the gents), is determining your outfit.

Probably plenty of tough guys out there reading right now are thinking, “Do you honestly think I care that much about fashion?” In reality, if you’re attending the Kentucky Derby, you should.

Carpe Diem seized yet another prep race victory on April 4 when the highly regarded Kentucky Derby hopeful won the $1-million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes by 3 lengths at Keeneland Race Course.

Positioning Carpe Diem just off of Ocho Ocho Ocho’s flank through most of the 1 1/8-mile race, it was obvious that jockey Johnny Velazquez was never worried about his horse’s chances to win the race.

Portland Meadows is a charming track in Portland, Oregon.

The incessant rains of the Pacific Northwest had temporarily let up and the temperature looked like it would hit a balmy 50 degrees. Gray skies and “warm” weather meant one thing! It was a great day for me to head to Portland Meadows for their 2015 Closing Day.
