These are common terms without government classification or definitions. While some terms are straightforward and legally bound by truth-in-labeling laws, others are generic and offer no help.

1. Kentucky is known as the horse capital of the world.

Paul Lo Duca grew up a baseball and horse racing fan has been able to realize his dreams by working in both professions. He spent 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, primarily as a catcher, and made four All-Star Teams before retiring with a career batting average of .286 and 1,112 hits. After his baseball career, Lo Duca paid his dues in the horse racing broadcasting world, and he currently serves as an analyst with NYRA’s television team. He reflected on his careers and offered some opinions on the state of horse racing in this recent Q&A.

Jay Privman has been a regular presence in print, on TV, and online in the horse racing world for over 35 years, the last 20 as the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup correspondent for Daily Racing Form. Privman, who is also a reporter on NBC Sports’ horse racing telecasts, recently gave a few minutes to share his opinions on the sport and some of his other interests.

Does age matter?

I’m the first whiskey writer to complain when a bourbon drops an age statement. Just ask Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, and others who endured my public and private whining. Once, while waiting in line at the Louisville airport, I told a distillery executive that they didn’t need to discontinue age statements if they stopped making flavored whiskey, my other favorite thing to hate in American whiskey.
