There is nothing as thrilling in horse racing as a deep closer surging past the rest of the field to complete a last-to-first rally.

Thoroughbreds in North America all celebrate their birthdays on Jan. 1, so as soon as the New Year rolls around, so does “foaling season” – that magical time that lasts from the beginning of January through the late spring when racehorse babies are born. In this weekly piece, we’ll bring you the best of new arrivals to the Thoroughbred world. So sit back, relax, and take in the Cute Foals of the Week for 2017!

It’s a peaceful afternoon in the barns at Belmont Park.  You hear the leaves rustling in the wind. The birds are having the time of their lives singing and chirping away. There is the soft plodding sound of hooves as a horse walks quietly in the shed row. In the distance, there is someone singing in Spanish. Across the street, you can hear snatches of French as trainer Christophe Clement gestures to his phone.

Exercise rider Orlando Cross is all business when he is out on the track riding Kentucky Derby contender State of Honor. He rides with strength and confidence. He wears a poker face traditional on exercise riders of his generation. He is easy to pick out with his striking red jacket, red gloves and a blue helmet covered with black stripes.

Hearing the word “Kentucky” immediately brings to mind images of racehorses and a glass of bourbon – an image reinforced by a drive through the Bluegrass past distilleries and horse farms.
