It’s not the kind of thing you see every day. Steve Buttleman sat on the curb outside Midas car repair, pulled out his trumpet and started to warm up. He wasn’t sure if he was going to go to an audition for the bugler position at Churchill Downs. His wife’s car was in the shop. The audition was going to be at 11:00 a.m. and he knew he was going to be late. In fact, he almost didn’t go. When he did arrived, he was embarrassed to see the other seven trumpet players were dressed up in suits and ties. He was in tennis shoes, cutoffs and a windbreaker.

Jeff Fager will deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Thoroughbred Owner Conference on Oct. 31  from 1:30 - 2:15 p.m. ET. The three-day conference, hosted OwnerView and BloodHorse, runs from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at the Del Mar Hilton in Southern California. Del Mar racetrack will host the 2017 Breeders' Cup World Championships on Nov. 3-4.

At just 27 years old, Arianna Spadoni has already lived several lives in horse racing. The irony in her story is that she never planned on a career in racing.

He is the poster boy for the old adage, “breed the best to the best and hope for the best.” His mother is Zenyatta, racing's iconic “dancing queen,” winner of 19 of 20 races, whose fan base has not skipped a beat since her retirement in 2010. His father is Tapit, lord of the breeding shed, leading sire of 2015, who commands a lofty $300,000 stud fee.

Blaring great tunes and singing along can build momentum for an outing to the track or a watch party for a big race. What could be better for these occasions than a custom-made horse racing playlist?

This eclectic group of songs comes from country, Americana, show tunes and rock (including traditional, southern and experimental). Though they may not have won Grammys, this musical diversity shows horse racing transcends genres and can be for everyone.
