Emma-Jayne Wilson began riding horses at the age of nine and went on to study equine management at the University of Guelph. In 2001, at 20 years old, Wilson wrote a promise to herself that she would make it as a jockey no matter what it took to succeed.
Wilson rode her first race on August 27, 2004 at Woodbine in Ontario. Her first win came the next day in just her second career mount. She earned the 2005 and 2006 Sovereign Awards for apprentice jockey, as well as the 2005 Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice jockey.

Wilson is the first woman jockey to have won the oldest race in North America, the Queen's Plate. On July 11, 2024, Wilson surpassed Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone for all-time purse earnings by a female jockey. She rode Perfect Lady Bee to victory at Woodbine for trainer Roger Attfield, and finished 2024 with career earnings of $91,393,443.
