John Fort started "Seaside Stable" in his home state in 1976 and the first Thoroughbred he owned was a mare named Stamp Saver, for whom he paid $500 to former University of South Carolina quarterback Mackie Prickett.

The South Carolina graduate caught the racing bug as a teenager while watching Hall of Fame trainers Max Hirsch and Woody Stephens train horses at the old fairgrounds training center (which would become the site of Williams-Brice Stadium, USC's football and baseball fields). He played polo and was a top-ranked amateur.

In 1981, he moved his stable to Atlanta, and adopted the name Peachtree Stable. Although Fort’s original business plan was to build racing partnerships, in recent years he has focused more on buying, selling and racing horses on his own. He breeds horses on his farm, Pine Grove Plantation, in South Carolina. He has campaigned Grade 1 winners Plum Pretty, Red Giant, and Lion Tamer.
