Charlton Baker is a native of Jamaica and fell in love with the sport of horse racing in his home country, where his father was a successful trainer. During the mid-1990s, Baker followed his family to New York, where his father trained at Finger Lakes. Baker began his own training career at the racetrack near Rochester, saddling his first winner in 1998, and in subsequent years became one of the most successful trainers there.

Baker also developed a reputation for shipping horses out of Finger Lakes to other New York tracks with success. In fall 2016, he earned his first two graded stakes wins as a trainer when Joking won the Grade 2 True North Stakes and then the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park.
