His Highness the Aga Khan, the imam of a branch of Shia Islam known as Nizari Ismailism, is one of the most influential owners-breeders of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
His Highness the Aga Khan, the imam of a branch of Shia Islam known as Nizari Ismailism, is one of the most influential owners-breeders of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Based in France, the Aga Khan has won many of the most prestigious Thoroughbred races in Europe and around the world including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the English and Irish Derbies. The Aga Khan’s family has been involved in the sport for over a century, and its excellence extended into the 2000s and 2010s with such star racehorses as Zarkava and Daryakana. The Aga Khan also operates a prominent stud farm in France standing sires such as Sea the Stars and Siyouni.
The Aga Khan made 18 appearances in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships through the years, with two wins: Kalanisi in the 2000 Turf, and Tarnawa in the 2020 Turf.
The Aga Khan died Feb. 4, 2025, at age 88.
