all in Triple Crown

Hot Rod Charlie is among the favorites for this year’s Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, coming to New York on June 5. ABR’s Penelope Miller met up with the fan favorite on Thursday morning as he trained for the Test of the Champion.

Patrick O’Neill, nephew to two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Doug O’Neill and bloodstock agent Dennis O’Neill, had a different interest from most college kids when he was an undergraduate student and a member of Brown University’s football team. He insisted on adding TVG to the fraternity house’s cable television package; he was the one who watched horse racing at every opportunity, including in class, and in film study prior to practice.

The 2021 Triple Crown will come to an end Saturday, back in its familiar setting of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets.

The Belmont Stakes Racing Festival is this weekend with a full slate of fantastic racing, beginning Thursday and running right through the loaded Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets card on June 5.

I suppose some folks could claim Saturday’s 153rd running of the $1.5 million Grade 1 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets isn’t quite as elite as it could be. The Belmont Park classic serves as the final leg of the Triple Crown, but for the third year in a row, there isn’t a Triple Crown bid on the line. Furthermore, just eight horses have been entered in the 1 1/2-mile test of speed and stamina, tied for the smallest field since 2008.
