If it’s a 3-year-old stakes in California, you can rest assured trainer Bob Baffert has won it quite a few times. The Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park is no exception. But unlike the Los Alamitos Futurity, which he seems to win every year, Baffert's most recent victories in the Grade 3 Sham have come in even years.
The 151st edition of the Jerome Stakes, which will be contested on Friday at Aqueduct, is not your grandad’s Jerome. Known for his charisma and colorful quotes, Lazaro Sosa Barrera was considered the Casey Stengel of the racetracks, with a treasure trove of stories and a backstretch philosophy. He recounted them all with his incomparable Spanish accent.
"A lot of people don't understand my English," the Cuban-born trainer once remarked. "If they don't understand me, it doesn't bother me because my horse understands my English very well."
