all in Horse Country

For anyone looking to take a first step toward a career in the world of racing, there’s a unique opportunity to do just that — but the window is closing with a rapidly approaching deadline of Friday, April 21. That’s the deadline to apply for a spot in the 2023 class of the Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program (MTCP).

The retraining process with Dom has definitely been a learning experience! From the moment he stepped off the trailer, I swear I learn something new every day! One of the biggest lessons I have learned has been about lameness and hoof care.

I have owned horses my entire life, but our horses were relatively low maintenance when it came to their feet. All they needed were regular trims and getting their feet picked.

When Bronn first came to me, over a year ago at this point, he was truly the epitome of what a racehorse should be. Sleek, strong, powerful, sound… When he walked off that trailer, I remember thinking this was a dream come true. In fact, I felt like Velvet watching The Pi walk towards her seemingly in a dream. How is this, how is HE, real!?

A longtime lover of the thoroughbred breed, the Thoroughbred Makeover has always been a goal of mine. However, the stars never seemed to align and my horses at any given time were neither eligible nor a good fit.

I’ve never been one to go with the grain or follow the most popular trends. I’m the type of person who makes her own path, seeks new challenges, and learns and grows from her mistakes.

Growing up in Prescott, Wis., my classmates labeled me as “the smart kid.” I wasn’t the most popular or the greatest at sports. Frankly, I was a klutz and injured myself more times than I can count. But in middle school, when all the other girls were into dance or volleyball, I decided to take riding lessons – and for me, that’s when everything changed.
