all in Legends

Perhaps if Maryjean Wall had been born 10 or 15 years later, she would have been a jockey instead of a pioneer for female journalists.

A native of Canada, she became enthralled with horse racing after reading a copy of Turf and Sport Digest previewing the 1961 Kentucky Derby. That sparked an avid interest in the sport and its equine athletes, and as she became a teenager she considering becoming a jockey.

Strong. Bright. Ambitious. Charming. Determined. Passionate. Ahead of her time.

Those were my impressions of Penny Chenery after having the pleasure of interviewing her on a number of occasions over the last few decades. She always made herself readily available. She invariably thanked me for reaching out before I could thank her for her valuable time.

Helen "Penny" Chenery, owner of 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat and a well-loved figure in her own right as a champion of Thoroughbreds and women in business and sports, died Sept. 16, in her Colorado home following complications from a stroke. She was 95.

Chenery's children announced her death through Leonard Lusky, her longtime friend and business partner.

Years ago, before the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing had reached a truly global scale and before shipping horses around the world was a matter of simple routine, a young man — a budding horseman — would ride in bareback races across Jumeirah Beach in Dubai. He was far removed from the world-famous Thoroughbred racetracks in countries like England, France, and the United States, but that would not be the case for long.

After 33 years and hundreds of horses, Tiznow still holds a notable distinction among Breeders’ Cup Classic runners. He’s the only horse who’s won it twice.

Tiznow capped a Horse of the Year campaign with a win in the race in 2000, and a year later redeemed his tough-luck season with another hard-fought victory in the Classic. A gritty, refuse-to-lose style was his hallmark and nowhere was it better displayed than in his Breeders’ Cup victories.
