Utah native Val Brinkerhoff is a former jockey and a third-generation horseman. He moved on to training after his career as a jockey concluded, mostly because at 5 foot, 10 inches, Brinkerhoff understandably had trouble keeping his weight down.
He took out his trainer’s license in 2008 and saddled his first stakes winner in 2011 when Raetodandty won the Green Flash Handicap. Restrainedvengence won seven stakes races for Brinkerhoff from 2018 to 2021, including his first graded stakes victory in the 2021 American Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
