Lucky Jeremy

Lucky Jeremy, a Lookin At Lucky colt trained by Bill Morey, finished fifth in his debut at Churchill Downs in September 2023 and then won his second start at the Louisville track on Oct. 29, leading a 6 ½-furlong race on a sloppy track at every point of call and scoring by 1 ½ lengths.

He then was shipped to New Mexico’s Sunland Park for his 3-year-old debut Jan. 19 in the one-mile Riley Allison Derby, and Lucky Jeremy resumed his winning ways after a nearly three-month break, forging clear in the stretch for a two-length victory.

That set him up for a first try in a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve points race, which took place Feb. 19 in the Sunland Park Derby. Lucky Jeremy set a pressured pace through the backstretch of the 1 1/16-mile race, with favored Stronghold just to his outside and often neck and neck with him, and although Lucky Jeremy was game, he could not keep up with that rival in the homestretch and was edged for second at the finish line by Alotaluck. Lucky Jeremy earned six qualifying points for the 150^th Kentucky Derby with the effort.

Lucky Jeremy's next start was another race on the road to the Kentucky Derby in the Grade 3 $700,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks going 1 1/8 miles on the all-weather track at Turfway Park on March 23. In the Jeff Ruby, Lucky Jeremy set the pace until the late stages when he was overtaken in deep stretch and settled for fifth, just missing second in a five-horse blanket place photo. The Jeff Ruby was a maximum points qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby, and with his fifth-place finish, Lucky Jeremy earned 10 more Derby points.
