Mentee won at first asking on June 15, 2024, for owner-breeder Repole Stable, taking a five-furlong dirt sprint at Belmont at the Big A by a nose. The City of Light colt set the pace and opened up by five lengths in early stretch and hung on late to prevail under John Velazquez.
He was then elevated to Grade 1 company for his next start, the seven-furlong Hopeful Stakes on Saratoga’s Sept. 2 closing day. Mentee was bumped at the start but recovered to press the early pace, only to tire entering the stretch and finish a well-beaten sixth of nine runners.

Mike Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher then tried Mentee on turf in the Grade 3 Futurity Stakes Oct. 4 at Belmont at the Big A, and the colt responded with an impressive victory under Velazquez. He sat just off of pacesetting Epitaph into the turn of the six-furlong dash, before taking over and opening up in early stretch to win by 3 ½ lengths. Mentee earned an automatic berth in the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar with his win in the Futurity.
Kentucky-bred Mentee is out of the winning Stay Thirsty mare Nonna Bella, making him a full brother to Repole’s homebred Fierceness, the champion 2-year-old male of 2023 and winner of the 2024 DraftKings Travers Stakes.
