Tiz the Law

Tiz the Law won his career debut impressively for trainer Barclay Tagg and owner Sackatoga Stable, surging clear to a 4 ¼-length runaway win Aug. 8 at Saratoga Race Course. The New York-bred gave his connections, best known as the owner-trainer combo for 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Funny Cide, another exciting, young prospect.

Tiz the Law lived up to the hype in his next start when he blew past graded stakes winner Green Light Go in the stretch to win the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes by four lengths. Rather than move on to the TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the connections of Tiz the Law pointed him to the Grade 2 Kentcuky Jockey Club Stakes Nov. 30 at Churchill Downs. Tiz the Law was trapped in traffic on the turn and in earlt stretch before rallying to finish third as the odds-on favorite.

Tiz the Law got back on track with an impressive win as the favorite in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes in his 3-year-old bow. He broke alertly in the 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Derby qualifying race, settled nicely off the pace, and then surged to the front nearing the top of the stretch en route to a clear victory. Tiz the Law made his next start on the Kentucky Derby trail in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby March 28 at Gulfstream Park and the talented colt was again a dominant winner.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Triple Crown season was significantly altered in the spring, with the Kentucky Derby postponed to Sept. 5 and the Preakness Stakes to Oct. 3. The Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, originally scheduled for June 6, was rescheduled to June 20 and shortened to 1 1/8 miles. Sackatoga Stable and Tagg pointed Tiz the Law to the Belmont Stakes, and he was sent off as an odds-on favorite against nine opponents.

In the one-turn Belmont Stakes, Tiz the Law broke sharp out of the gate and stalked pacesetter Tap It to Win in third through the backstretch and into the turn. He dispatched that opponent at the top of the stretch and pulled clear of the field, coasting to a 4 ¾-length victory over Dr Post that kicked off an unprecedented Triple Crown season. Tiz the Law earned 150 Kentucky Derby qualifying points with his Belmont win, boosting his overall total to 272.

Tiz the Law was equally impressive in August at Saratoga, where he stalked pacesetter Uncle Chuck, moved alongside that opponent on the final turn, and then surged clear to a 5 1/2-length runaway victory in the $1 million Runhappy Travers Stakes. He picked up another 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard and cemented his status as the favorite for the run for the roses as well as the clear leader of the 3-year-old male division.

Tiz the Law's bid for the Triple Crown and his four-race winning streak came to a halt when he could not match strides with Authentic in deep stretch in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs. Pacesetted Authentic fought back gamely inside to turn back Tiz the Law's rally as the Constitution colt settled for second in the run for the roses.

Tiz the Law is from the first crop of 2014 Florida Derby winner Constitution out of the Grade 2 winner Tizfiz, by two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow.
