White Abarrio

White Abarrio started his career with two consecutive victories at Gulfstream Park in Florida. He won his career debut by 6 3/4 lengths on Sept. 24, then won a first-level allowance optional claiming contest by four lengths on Oct. 29. He made his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 27 where he finished third, beaten six lengths. 

In his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream on Feb. 5, 2022, White Abarrio announced his presence as a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender at that stage of the game. He enjoyed a great trip just off the lead and drew off in the stretch to win by 4 1/2 lengths, covering 1 1/16 miles in a solid 1:42.80. 

White Abarrio skipped Gulfstream Park’s next Kentucky Derby prep, the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes, and trained up to the Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm at Xalapa on April 2. The colt spiked a fever days before the race but recovered in time to run. White Abarrio aced his test in the Florida Derby with a sweeping rally under Tyler Gaffalione, moving past Simplification in midstretch and then holding off a late challenge from Charge It to win by 1 ¼ lengths.

White Abarrio subsequently was sent off at 15.40-1 odds in the Kentucky Derby, but he never threatened in the run for the roses, finishing 16^th of 20.

Following the Kentucky Derby defeat, White Abarrio rebounded with a strong runner-up effort behind Tawny Port in his next start, the Grade 3 Ohio Derby at Thistledown on June 25. Unfortunately the momentum was short lived. White Abarrio was later seventh in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth and fifth in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx.  He did end the year on a promising high note, however, when finishing third by a half a length in a much-improved effort in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 3.

White Abarrio began his 4-year-old campaign in a tough spot in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28, 2023.  He did get back in the winner's circle in his next start, which was a victory in a Gulfstream Park allowance optional claiming race at seven furlongs on March 4.

Trained until that point in his career by Saffie Joseph Jr., White Abarrio was transferred to the barn of trainer Richard Dutrow prior to his next outing, which was a solid third-place effort in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 10.

White Abarrio made his next start in another Grade 1 spot in the $1 million Whitney Stakes on August 5 at Saratoga, where he faced prohibitive favorite Cody's Wish in a six-horse field. Sent off as the 10.20-1 fourth choice on the tote board, White Abarrio pressed the pace throughout, moved to the lead to the stretch, and then powerfully extended to an impressive 6 1/4-length win in a time of 1:48.45 for the 1 1/8 miles over a fast track.

White Abarrio elected to train up to the 1 1/4-mile Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita for his next start and entered the starting gate for the $6 million Classic off a three-month layoff. White Abarrio was ready. He stalked the pace close-up throughout the race in a 12-horse field and made his move to challenge at the top of the stretch under Irad Ortiz Jr. and prevailed by a length on the wire ahead of runner-up Derma Sotogake of Japan in a time of 2:02 4/5.

White Abarrio returned for the beginning of his 5-year-old season with a start in the world's richest race, the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 24, 2024. He was sent off as the 6-5 favorite in United States pari-mutuel wagering, but disappointed and finished 10th in the 14-horse field. His next race was on June 8 in the $1 million Metropolitan Mile Handicap at the Belmont Stakes racing festival at Saratoga on June 8, when he finished fifth in a six-horse field.

White Abarrio subsequently was transferred back to the barn of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. following the Met Mile loss. He finally got back in the winner's circle for the first time as a 5-year-old in his next start, which came going seven furlongs in an allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 22. He disappointed again, however, in his final start of 2024 when second as the 2-5 favorite in the Grade 3 $165,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 28 to conclude his sparse 2024 campaign.

White Abarrio made his 6-year-old debut in the Grade 1 $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25, 2025, and proved that he remains a major factor at the top level of the sport, especially at Gulfstream Park, with a dominant victory atop an 11-horse field. In the Pegasus, White Abarrio stalked the pace much of the way and edged closer with a wide move around the turn and then sprinted to the front at the top of the stretch and extended to a dominant 6 1/4-length victory atop an 11-horse field. The win was White Abarrio's seventh career score at Gulfstream Park in nine lifetime outings at that track.

White Abarrio was bred in Kentucky by the sire Race Day out of the mare Catching Diamonds by Into Mischief.
